There was a time when I would go above and beyond to defend my major. People would ask things like, “Songwriting…really? Can you get a job with that?” or even “is that a real major?” There was a time when I was offended by these ignorant comments. But not any more.
I don’t have to justify decisions like that to others. I’m a songwriting major because I want to be, and that’s a decision I made and continue to make every day. If you want to hear more about it, I’d be glad to meet you for a cup of coffee. I do love coffee.
I used to follow up “I’m a songwriting major” with “but it’s okay because I’m taking a lot of business classes.” But I don’t want to say that ever again, because the truth is that I’m a songwriting major because I get to take awesome songwriting classes. I shouldn’t have to justify my decisions based on what other people want to hear.
Sometimes “because I want to” is a perfect response.
So in the new year, I’m going to work on this, and I hope that all of you who read this will too.
Your decisions are yours for a reason. Do things because you want to, not because the rest of the world does.
